While Florida in general has a high occurences of hurricanes, Northeast Florida does not. One of the attractions of Northeast Florida to both out-of-staters as well as residents of South Florida is the infrequency of hurricanes in our area. THe only major hurricane to hit our coast was in 1964 when Dora hit St Johns County.
This is due to both the curvature of the coastline in our area, as well as the air currents out in the ocean ( the Bermuda High Pressue Ridge) which has protected from a direct hit from a hurricane.
According to "Hurricane Watch" a book written by Jack Williams and Dr. Bob Sheets, there is a 1.9% probability of a major hurricane (111 mph or greater) in our area. That is the lowest probability of any area in Florida.
